13 Aug 98 - This image shows sea surface height relative to normal on 13 August. The image of 13 August shows that the large area of lower-than-average ocean that corresponds to cold water (purple) appears to have stalled; there has been almost no movement of the cold water mass in the last two months. Small remnants of the El Niño still linger. Scientists are still watching the area to see if it evolves into a La Niña. A La Niña is a situation when cold water dominates the tropical Pacific Ocean. This situation, should it develop, will also produce non-typical weather patterns.
